Northerners, on the other hand, felt quite confident. As one editorialist opined: “Doom hangs over wicked Charleston. That viper’s nest and breeding place of rebellion is, ere this time, invested by Union Arms—perhaps already in our hands.” That, of course, proved to be overly optimistic, but given what information civilians received at the time, the optimism was understandable. Not all northerners shared it, though. Commodore Du Pont wrote to his wife on June 13 that “the army operations I think have been a dead failure—Drayton thinks it highly probable they will meet with some disaster.”

Commanding the Gist Guard, South Carolina Heavy Artillery, Capt. Charles Edward Chichester had the bad luck to lose three of his four carronades in the marsh near the site of the June 3 skirmishing. (cmc)
